Mass Effect 3 sits on the end of a promise. A promise its predecessor made to me when I first put in the disc. That my decisions would matter, and not only that, but they would change the game itself. Mass Effect was an experiment in how videogames could tell engaging stories, in how much agency the audience has in the telling of the tale. Everyone started in the same place, but no two people would have the same Commander Shepard, nor would they have the same galaxy. Each decision would cascade into millions more, changing each player’s experience with the game. It would be an ultimately personal story of your very own Commander Shepard, and your very own galaxy.
Mass Effect 3 fulfills that promise, but in doing so, serves to highlight its few flaws
